Benefits are usually justified on sentiment and reviewed on cost. EV charging salary sacrifice is one of the few where the finance case stands on its own, provided you measure the right things.

1. Employer National Insurance

Because charging is paid from gross pay, employer National Insurance is calculated on a lower salary figure. That is a direct, recurring saving that scales with take-up, and it is the first line of the business case.

2. Employee saving, aggregated

A driver saving 20-50% on charging typically keeps between £300 and £1,000 a year. Multiply by expected take-up and you have the value delivered to employees at no additional salary cost.

3. Avoided reimbursement error

If you currently reimburse business mileage at a flat rate, quantify the variance between what you pay and what charging actually costs. Over-payment is real cash and a potential tax exposure; Reimburse removes both.

4. Administration time

Count the hours currently spent on charging receipts, mileage queries and manual claim checks. Automating that is a soft saving, but it is a saving your finance team will feel immediately.

5. Retention and recruitment

Harder to price, but not impossible. Compare retention among EV drivers before and after launch, and track how often the benefit appears in candidate conversations.

6. Scheme uptake on the car benefit itself

Charging support frequently increases take-up of the underlying car scheme, because it removes the running-cost uncertainty that makes people hesitate. That improves the economics of a scheme you are already paying to run.

Putting a number on it

Start with employer NI and reimbursement variance, because both are hard numbers you already hold. Everything else strengthens the case rather than carrying it.
